In 1992, following his VFL/AFL playing career In 1992, he was a part of the Ainslie Football Club in the ACT as coach and captain, and helped them reach the flag, a feat that was which was repeated the following year when he was awarded the Alex Jesaulenko Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding field during the final. Cloke’s sole club’s highest and fairest prize came in 1992 at Ainslie. However, he did get an All Australian selection after representing Victoria at the 1979 Perth State of Origin Carnival. He was a member of Victorian Football Association club Port Melbourne as a non-playing coach in 1994, but was able to take part in a few games in the course of the season because of his team’s lengthy injury list.

Cloke was an ruckman, as well as an occasional forward . He began his career at VFA club Oakleigh where he was a player alongside Peter, his brother. Peter and, in 1974, Cloke joined Richmond. Cloke was a premiership athlete during his first season with the Tigers and was able to participate in 219 VFL games between 1974 and 1982 (including another win in the Grand Final in 1980) and from 1990 to 1991. Between those seasons, he played with Collingwood and Collingwood, playing additional 114 games in the league.

Cloke scored 323 goals in his 18 season VFL career until he retired in the year 1991. Cloke finished third to win the Brownlow Medal in 1984, three votes shy of the winner Peter Moore. Cloke was awarded All Australian selection after representing Victoria at the Perth State of Origin carnival of 1979.
