Davi Kopenawa Yanomami is one of the most popular and richest Shaman who was born on February 18, 1956 in Amazonas, Brazil. Davi Kopenawa Yanomami (name also spelled Davi Kobenawa Yanomamo (born Toototobi, Brazil, in the year. 1956) is a Yanomami Shaman and an official of the Portuguese- speaking Yanomami Indians in Brazil. He gained acclaim for his work in promoting tribal issues as well as Amazon rainforest conservation after the tribal rights group Survival International invited him to accept the Right Livelihood Award on its behalf in 1989. The year 2019 saw Yanomami as well as his organization, the Hutukara Yanomami Association were also presented with the Right Livelihood Award. Yanomami addressed representatives of both British and Swedish parliaments regarding the devastating consequences for Yanomami’s health due to the illegal invading of their territory by 40,000 “garimpeiros also known as goldminers. Prince Charles has publicly referred to the situation a “genocide”. Over a seven-year span from 1987 to 1993, one fifth of Yanomami suffered from malaria, as well as other diseases that were caused by miners.
In 2004, Yanomami as well as others Yanomami in Brazil established an organization named Hutukara to protect their rights. Alongside promoting Yanomami rights it also manages educational programs where Yanomami teachers are employed in the communities to teach literacy maths, geography, maths and human rights.
His non-Yanomamö supporters in Brazil, intelligent and well-intentioned advocates of the Yanomamö cause, are promoting him as a spokesman for his people. Such a role exists largely because our culture must deal with other cultures through their leaders – it is the only way we know how to deal with them. Everything I know about Davi Kobenawä is positive, and I am confident that he is a sincere and honest man. When I read his proclamations, I am moved – but I am also sure that someone from our culture wrote them. They have too much the voice of Rousseau’s idealism and sound very non-Yanomamö. My concern is that he is being put into a difficult position, fraught with consequences for the future of the Yanomamö. For one thing, there is currently no such thing as a pan-Yanomamö awareness, and so he cannot possibly be speaking for the Venezuelan Yanomamö.
Davi Kopenawa Yanomami together with the Hutukara Yanomami Association (Brazil) have won the Right Livelihood Award in 2019
Since the invading of Yanomami territory with the illegal gold miners, Yanomami has worked for their expulsion from the region and the creation of a park in the area. His actions led to threats to kill the miners as well as being awarded an award by the United Nations Environment Programme in 1988. Following a major campaign spearheaded by Yanomami, Survival International and CCPY, the Brazilian government finally acknowledged Yanomami’s rights to land in 1992, just ahead of the UN’s Earth Summit.
