The director Trevor Nunn put Willetts into the cast of the original London production Les Miserables and within a year, he became an understudy to Colm Wilkinson as the leading role of Jean Valjean which Willetts was eventually able to take over when Wilkinson quit at the end of 1986, to be part of his fellow actors in the Broadway company. In 1987, after Michael Crawford departed London for the US premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Willetts succeeded him at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End. He then performed the role of The Phantom in Manchester during the UK tour, to acclaim from critics which culminated in the Evening News Theatre Award. He received his first opportunity to play the role. He starred alongside Petula Clark as Someone Like You, a musical that she had written the music.
