David Leslie Stapleton (born January 16th 1954) is an ex- Major League Baseball player who played for the Boston Red Sox from 1980 until 1986. Stapleton was a student at the University of South Alabama. He is currently residing in Daphne, Alabama.

In Game 6 in the 1986 World Series, Red Sox manager John McNamara left Buckner in the game, rather than replacing him with Stapleton to protect the team which led to the Mookie Wilson ground ball that sailed through Buckner’s legs, allowing his New York Mets a come-from-behind victory in the 10th innings. The Mets were able to win the Series by a score of four to three.

The years 1982-83, he played as the team’s primary baseman. He was then relegated in 1983 to Bill Buckner in 1984. From 1984 until 1986, Stapleton was only able to play 82 matches in his team, the Red Sox.
