He backed up his award as Reds Minor League Hitter of the Year by hitting .564 (22-for-38), along with three homers and 12 RBI. However, Sappelt was cut from the Reds roster late in spring. Manager Dusty Baker said that a lot of the decision had to do with the fact that Sappelt was not on the 40-man roster, which at the time was full.

Sappelt began 2010 with the single-A Advanced Lynchburg Hillcats. He scored .282 with no hits and 4,0 RBI in 71 games. He was moved to Double-A Carolina and was able to hit .361 in the process, with nine homers and the 62 RBI during 330 at-bats. He was the post-season and mid-season All-Star with the Southern League for the Mudcats and was named the Southern League Most Valuable Player. His efforts earned him move into Triple-A Louisville, where he reached .324 with one hit and eight RBI in 108 games for the Bats. The totals of his season for 2010 included 509 at-bats, .342 average, 10 homers and the 74 RBI. His name was selected as the Reds Minor League Player Of the Year. His performance during the season led to him being invited to the highly regarded Arizona Fall League, where the team scored .292 in 72 games, and had 10 RBI. He also took part at the Venezuelan Winter League, batting .305 with one hit as well as 10- RBI in 118 games. He was invited by the non-roster team to spring training for the 2011 season.
