David McPherson (born 28 January 1964 at Paisley) is an Scottish ex-international football player who was a defender and is most famous for his time with Rangers as well as Heart of Midlothian, spending two seasons with each club.
McPherson was first picked to represent Scotland in a match against Cyprus on the 26th of April, 1989, a game Scotland won 1-1 in Hampden Park. Although he was still a novice at the international level McPherson was chosen as part of the Scotland team during at the time of the FIFA World Cup, appearing in all three group matches since Scotland had just missed qualifying for knockout stage. McPherson’s impressive performances led to being a regular in Scotland’s national side and he missed only one qualifying match as Scotland made it to the 1992 Euro Championships. McPherson was in the starting line-up for the entire group in Sweden however, Scotland was not able to make it to the knockout stage.
Financial troubles at Hearts dictated McPherson’s next move, as he returned to the Edinburgh club in part exchange for Alan McLaren, Rangers also paying Hearts £1.25m. By now approaching the veteran stage, McPherson played an important role in nurturing Hearts’ next generation of defenders such as Paul Ritchie and Gary Locke. He also helped the club to victory over Rangers in the 1998 Scottish Cup Final, their first silverware in 36 years, having lost the 1996 Scottish Cup Final to the same opponents. He is ranked as 20th on Hearts’ all-time appearances list (375 matches) despite only having spent half of his career with the club.
After leaving Tynecastle in the summer of 1999, McPherson wound down his playing career in Australia with Carlton S.C. in Melbourne, and back in Scotland with Greenock Morton, where he combined playing with a coaching role for one season in 2001–02 before concentrating on coaching.
The change brought on due to the arrival the arrival of Graeme Souness (and numerous new signings) at Rangers resulted in McPherson being judged to be surplus to demands, and he was transferred to Hearts for a price of PS325,000 in 1987. McPherson soon was a regular in the Tynecastle lineup, helping Hearts get regular top league results while also enhancing his personal fame. Within two years , he became both a Scotland captain and a national team player. But, despite several near misses, the Jambos failed to overcome their trophy drought. When the amount of debt began to increase, McPherson, by then the club’s most valuable asset was sold for Rangers in 1992 for PS1.3m.

McPherson started his career with his club, the amateur side Gartcosh United before starting his professional career with the boyhood club Rangers in the year 1980. He was able to break into the first squad while still just a teenager.

The flipside to this success, however was the continual arrival of internationally renowned players competing for positions, and McPherson again found himself relegated to the bench by 1994.
