On November 8, 2008 DeRoo received a sentence of 45 days prison after having pleaded no contest to DUI inflicting injuries. On January 29, 2011, DeRoo was arrested just moments prior to an appearance in the Webster Theater in Hartford Connecticut and charged with being a fugitive from justice. It was the consequence of a warrant that was issued by Kern County for violating probation conditions set out in his arrest of 2008. DeRoo was detained in remand, with bail of $1 million. the exact nature of the probation violation was not made public.

In the early 2000s, DeRoo joined the band Adema and replaced their original bassist Mike “Motown” Montano. Following the change in the lineup and the introduction of DeRoo as bassist, Adema got signed on to a deal to Arista Records by then CEO and president Antonio L.A. Reid. Adema’s self-titled debut album Adema came out in the month of August of 2001 and received moderately positive reviews. Two songs of the album “Giving In” and “The Way You Like It,” were able to receive significant radio airplay, and the album received the prestigious certification of Gold. In 2005, influenced by the Adema’s lead vocalist Luke Caraccioli, a former Marine himself, Adema became part of an established tradition of performing for soldiers on the frontline through an USO tour.
