Chomiak was the first person elected as a member of Chomiak was first elected to Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in the 1990 provincial election located in north Winnipeg district of Kildonan. He beat Progressive Conservative contestant David Langtry by 210 votes; Progressive Party leader Sidney Green placed fourth. Following his victory, Chomiak along with the other 19 NDP MLAs to form the official opposition to Gary Filmon’s administration.
Chomiak was elected again in the election of 1995 in the 1995 election, beating Tory Robert Praznik 5812 votes to 3624. He improved his margin of victory during his 1999 campaign, beating PC incumbent Shannon Martin by 6101 votes to 2542. The NDP was victorious in this election as did Chomiak. Chomiak was appointed Cabinet with the title of Minister of Health and Minister in charge of Sport. Chomiak was relieved of his the responsibility for Sport on the 17th of January 2001.
In September 2006, Chomiak was appointed as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and to the Manitoba Public Insurance and Manitoba Gaming Control Commission in Gary Doer’s new cabinet.
