Dashni Morad is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on January 1, 1986 in Sulaymaniyah, Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq. Morad was born the 1st of January 1986 in Sulaimaniyah located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to Kurdish parents. In the aftermath of the Kurdish revolt against the Ba’ath government in 1991, a record number of Kurds left into the Kurdistan Region in fear of threats of reprisals by Saddam Hussein. Morad at the time, aged five was forced to leave toward the Iranian border along with her family until she was able to return home.
Morad was always fascinated by being a singer, and in 2008, she met producer Halkawt Zahir, with whom she later recorded 3 albums. The year 2009 was the year she started her musical career by releasing her debut album “Hela Hupa”, which though successful, it was also controversial. The music style was described as folk music that featured pop beats. The dance moves she performed during”Hela Hupa,” the “Hela Hupa” music video made media outlets call her”the “Shakira of Kurdistan”. While a majority of the younger generation adored her songs and videos however, the more conservative part of society considered them inappropriate. Some Imams preached against her in mosques, and certain conservative television channels refused to air the music video she made. At one time she also received threats to kill her.
In 2011, she released her third album, “Frishtay Mihraban”, which was a much bigger success than her second album. Later in 2011, well known for her kind- heartedness, Morad helped an Ethiopian maid, Maha, to become a singer in the Kurdistan Region.
Morad is a human rights and environmental activist. She founded “Green Kids” in 2012, which is a charity focused on underprivileged children, in particular refugee children, as well as the environment. Amongst other things, Green Kids provides books and learning materials to schools. To date, Green Kids has distributed over 200,000 books to underprivileged children.
Always wanting to work in the field of television when she was 19 Morad took part in a show of her own on an adjacent Kurdish TV station, and her concept was embraced. “Be Kontrol,” the show “Be Kontrol”, was the first program of this kind of show in the Kurdistan Region to explore Western culture openly. A lot of people in the Kurdistan Region, particularly the young people, believe Morad for breaking down the cultural and social barriers that were previously imposed on young women. The show ran during two consecutive years in the Kurdistan Region on Kurdistan TV, a major Iraqi Kurdish television network, and Morad quickly became a household name within the Kurdistan Region.

Dashni Morad (Kurdish: Desne Morad or Arabic: daeshnY mwrd; born 1 January, 1986) is known as a Kurdish musician, singer TV presenter, environmental and human rights activist. Born in Kurdistan her family relocated from the region to Holland to seek refuge the family members in. Her popularity grew in 2005 with her tv program, “Be Kontrol”, that was the first show program of this kind within the Kurdistan Region to explore pop culture and the underlying aspects of modern Western culture in a candid manner. A lot of people within the Kurdistan Region, particularly the youngsters, think Dashni to have overcome traditional and cultural barriers for women in their teens. Since 2009 Dashni made her debut in the world of music when she released her debut album “Hela Hupa”, which though successful, it was not without controversy. Her provocative dancing moves on the soundtrack caused media publications to call her”the “Shakira of Kurdistan”. At the age of 11, in 1997 she relocated into the town in Arnhem located in the Netherlands as a refugee in the company of her family. In Arnhem she attended St. Paulus school for two years before she relocated to the town near by of Didam in the year 1999. She went to Liemers College, where she received an HAVO certificate. The model began her modeling career at the age of 16, and also began taking up street dancing. She also played football in her teens before her parents made her leave the sport for reasons of culture.
Morad persisted to make music with intentionally open Western themes. In 2010, she released her second album, “Shika Wawa”, which was boycotted by much of the television and media industry in the Kurdistan Region. However, the first single released from the album, “Hom Shika Wawa”, was more successful abroad, receiving significant airtime on the Arab world’s leading music channel, Rotana. Fadi Haddad, the renowned Lebanese director, directed the music video for “Hom Shika Wawa”. It was the first time that an Iraqi Kurdish artist had a music video aired on a major international music channel. Also in 2010, Morad presented “The Dashni Show”, which was a talk show that openly discussed female issues such as romantic relationships, which is a subject that remains taboo in Kurdish society.

She is currently running a campaign called “Yazidi Girls”, aimed at raising money and awareness in support of Yazidis and other minorities who have suffered at the hands of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq. In 2014, Morad collected over 30 tons of aid in cooperation with Mala Ezidi Kalkar, donated by people from her local community in Arnhem, for internally displaced Yazidis in the Kurdistan Region.
