Darryl Yokley II (born February 2nd, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is an American alto and tenor jazz saxophonist, composer, and music conservatory instructor. Darryl began to study jazz following extensive study in classical saxophone. As a bandleader for Sound Reformation, Yokley has been recognized as an innovative music producer and soloist since the release of their first album The Void (2012). Yokley has played alongside Motown famous bands such as The Four Tops, The Temptations as well as The O’Jays, and other prominent musicians.

In the midst of managing his own group, Yokley often performs with an artist named Rhonda Ross and his fellow Sound Reformation bandmate Duane Eubanks. Yokley is the special guest at the ceremony for the awards ceremony at the 2017 Arpa International Film Festival in Hollywood Yokley has performed with famous producer and musician Quincy Jones, and has been able to perform on stage internationally playing as a sideman, as well as an exclusive concert guest in Japan.

Darryl Yokley formed his band Sound Reformation in 2010. The band’s debut record The Void (2012) received positive reviews of reviewers Brent Black and Charles Latimer. The group premiered a commissioned work to The Philadelphia Museum of Art in January of 2015, which was met with praise from critics and audience members alike, as well as in the Philadelphia City Paper.

Yokley began his studies in music in his home state of California beginning at age 10 on the clarinet before transitioning to saxophone one year later when he entered middle school. Yokley quickly adapted to the saxophone as well as the musical language, performing in honors bands for jazz and classical. Yokley relocated from North Carolina in high school and was introduced to his future saxophone instructor James Houlik at a clinic in Lenoir, NC. In 1997, it was at this point that Yokley chose to focus exclusively on classical saxophone. It took ten years before he completely recommitted his life to jazz. He was a student at Duquesne University for his undergraduate studies, and Michigan State University for graduate studies. He studied under the legendary James Houlik and then later the concert with alto saxophonist Joseph Lulloff in Michigan, training constantly and enhancing his technique on the instrument.

After graduating from Michigan State University, Yokley began playing and touring with Motown legends like the Four Tops, the Temptations along with the O’Jays. Yokley moved from Detroit to Philadelphia for 2007 and was able to finish the “doctoral studies” from mentors like Tim Warfield, Orrin Evans, Mike Boone, Sid Simmons, Mickey Roker, Edgar Bateman, and Byron Landham who performed frequently in Philadelphia. Yokley relocated from Philadelphia to New York in 2009 and within a short time began playing with Orrin Evans and The Captain Black Big Band, Captain Black Big Band, Valery Pomonarev Jack Walrath, Frank Lacy, Duane Eubanks, Bill McHenry Stacy Dillard and many more.

In 2018, Darryl Yokley released his second album with the Sound Reformation entitled ‘Pictures at an African Exhibition’ accompanied by a small chamber wind ensemble. The project is also his first cross disciplinary collaboration with British born artist David Emmanuel Noel, who specifically produced original artwork for the album.
