The children were raised with their grandparents William Stroud and his wife. Stroud worked as a foreman of his city’s department of street work. For a long time, the children were told that their mother Jean who came to visit, had been their aunt. Her death occurred at the age of nine. Hunt was nine years old and Hunt told me that when he became when he was a teenager, he became in a state of trance over her death. Children went to the local school for some while; Hunt dropped out of high school. He was sent on a vacation to Monterey, California with a cousin, but returned to the home in the town he grew up in at age 18.

In a police interview following the DNA match with that of the Sykes investigation, Brown confessed to the 1984 stabbing and rape of Sykes. Brown’s confession eventually led to the exoneration of the entire group and the released for Darryl Hunt in 2004, who had already served nearly 19 years in the life sentence for crimes that Hunt denied committing.

In 1985 Hunt was convicted of the rape and first-degree murder of Sykes; the jury had eleven whites and one black man. (The three alternates were also white; the county’s population was 25% black.) According to a later discussion by the jury foreman, members had a difficult time with the case, initially voting 7-5 in favor of guilt. Ultimately they did vote unanimously that he was guilty of first-degree murder. In the separate vote for sentencing, Hunt was spared the death penalty because none of the jurors voted for the capital sentence. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Becoming a modern cause célèbre, Hunt’s case was said to have “helped define race relations in Winston-Salem for 20 years.” It resulted in an internal review and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation making its own inquiry in 1986. Incumbent District Attorney Tisdale lost his bid for re- election in the Democratic primary that same year. The Winston-Salem Journal published articles on the case in a 2003 series as a result of its six-month investigation into how the police and prosecution had investigated and shaped the discussion of the murder; they tried to reconcile the new DNA evidence with other facts to keep Hunt in jail. The newspaper published an “Epilogue” with the series in 2007 after Hunt was exonerated and freed in 2004.

The year 1983 was the time Arthur Wilson, a black man aged 57 was killed and beaten around 2 am in an ice cream shop within Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Juke bars, or apartments, were common in poor communities of both races and served as a convenient spot for drunks throughout the night or day. Police pursued a few leads but didn’t arrest anyone suspected of being involved. The police reopened the Wilson case in 1986 following getting new evidence.
