Daran Ponter (born 20 February 1968) is a New Zealand local-body politician who at the end of October, 2019, succeeded Chris Laidlaw as the chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
As of May, 2020 the council announced that all tickets would be fully subventioned until June. This means that every bus and train journey absolutely free.
The first time he was elected as a member of the council in the year 2010 and was in office until 2013, after which he failed to win an election. But he was appointed as an additional council member in April of 2016 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the former chairman Fran Wilde. He was elected for two additional terms in 2016 as well as the year 2019. In the year 2019’s elections, the council was appointed chairperson by the council without opposition.

Ponter was born in Kitwe in Zambia’s central province. The family relocated later in Suva, Fiji where he went to school. After arriving at New Zealand in 1981, Ponter worked as a gas station attendant at Palmerston North before studying sociology and geography at Massey University. After graduating, he earned an MA in Politics and Public Affairs at Victoria University in Wellington. Prior to entering politics, he worked as an official in the regional planning department for the Bay of Plenty and in various departments. Then, he founded an independent consulting firm for public policy together with the help of his spouse Vickie.
Ponter first made an appearance in the race for election in 1998, where Ponter unsuccessfully ran for his seat on the Wellington Regional Council as part of the Labour Party ticket. In 2001, he was a candidate for Wellington City Council in the Eastern Ward, but was again unsuccessful.
