Daphna Joel (Hebrew Dpnh yvAl, born on 20 January 1967) is an Israeli neuroscientist. She is a senior member of Faculty of the School of Psychological Sciences and the School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University. Since 2003 she has been the director of the department of psychobiology and was named as chairperson of the committee for PhD in the School of Psychological Sciences.

Joel considers gender and feminism as her main research areas. When she spoke to The Marker, she said that even as a kid as well as during the time of her service in military (ages 18 to 20) she shared feminist ideas. Joel says that in the Western world of gendered gender males (as defined by their gender- specific genitals) are portrayed as “boys”, and genitally classified females are turned into “girls”. According to Joel her, the view of society and culture divides the realm of possibilities into two halves. She believes that in a world that is gender-neutral in which there is no significance socially or culturally to the form of the genitals of a woman, there are many more possibilities for females as well as males.

Joel started her academic career in the course of her mandatory military service, which was part of the Talpiot program that she quit after a year and half. Following her military service, Joel enrolled in the Tel Aviv University program for exceptional students. She earned a bachelor’s degree in medical science. She was and then a doctorate degree in the field of psychobiology (1998) that focused on the way that connections in the brain are structured. She was then a member of the neuroscience faculty following the award of the Alon scholarship for next-generation Israeli researchers. Her primary area of study for 15 years was neuro-psychological mechanisms that underlie obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

The year 2009 was the time that Joel was the first to start “Women/Men Conflict Groups” for undergraduates in psychology The program was created through the work of Prof. Ariella Friedman, according to a model she developed within dialog groups comprised of Jews in Neve Shalom and Arabs from Neve Shalom. In the following years, she came up with a model that can be used by groups dealing with gender-related issues that combines the model of conflict groups along with the awareness group model of the 1970s. Based on this model, she started developing a course in gender psychology and psychology called “Is pink a girl color? ” The course examines social conventions, such as the definition of “feminine” and “masculine,” and the attitudes of people which are often subconscious towards diverse things from the perspective that they are gender. The course’s creation was the catalyst that led Joel to study what she called the “male brain” and “female brain” in the early 2000s.

One of the most important studies on which Joel’s theory is based was done by pharmacologist Margaret McCarthy from the University of Maryland. McCarthy found that characteristics in male and female animal brains can cause changes in their shapes as a result of external circumstances such as stress. Joel concluded from the results of this study and other studies she examined that if under pressure certain areas of the brain can turn from their typical “female form” to the typical “male form” – there is no point in talking about a female brain and a male brain, and that this division is meaningless.
