Daniel Paul “Danny” Chew (born on the 26th of August 1962) is an American former professional ultramarathon and road racing cyclist who has twice won his race, the Race Across America. He also is the co-founder and organizer of the Dirty Dozen, an annual road bike race through the most sloping hills in Pittsburgh. Chew was inducted in 2014 of the UltraCycling Hall of Fame.
Prior to the accident in the year 2016 Chew had been diagnosed as having Asperger’s syndrome. Chew graduated with the degree of bachelor of science in mathematics at The University of Pittsburgh in 1987.
The year 1994 was the time that Chew made the switch to a competitive goal from racing on roads to more ultradistance events. The year prior, he was 4th in his first appearance in the transcontinental Race Across America (RAAM). He finished second in RAAM in 1995 and then won the next year. Chew also won the 1999 RAAM event, which he called “tiredness beyond belief.” Chew has been a solo eight times RAAM winner.

Chew began cycling in 1971, aged 9 years old after being introduced to cycling by his elder sister. Both his parents were also cyclists and Chew started accompanying his family members on leisure cycling trips during the same year. Chew completed his first 200-mile race the following year in 1972, taking part in his way through the Midwest Double Century in Lima, Ohio with his family.
Chew began his professional career in 1985, and placed 12th in the nation’s championship race Chew was a professional in 1985, which was the Corestates USPro in Philadelphia. He finished 25th next year, and was 16th in 1987. Chew rode as an individual or free-agent professional, with no team support during every single appearance.
On September 4, 2016 around Noon, Chew was seriously injured when he suffered from vertigo while riding and crashed into a drainage ditch on Kennard Road near Lodi, Ohio. He was initially diagnosed with a broken neck and possible paralysis. The following month, Dr. Elliot Roth of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago confirmed that Chew was permanently paralyzed from the chest down and would never walk again. Despite having contemplated suicide in the weeks immediately following his accident, Chew suggested during the final days of his hospital stay that he would resume his goal of riding one million lifetime miles, albeit aboard a handcycle.
