Daniel Robert Woolf FSA FRHistS Daniel Robert Woolf FSA FRSC (born 5 December , 1958) is a Canadian-born British historian. He was the 20th Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario which was a post which was announced in January 2009, and was set to take his office on September 1st of 2009. His previous position was Professor in the department of History and Classics, at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in Alberta, where he was also Dean in the Faculty of Arts until April 2009. He was appointed to a second time as the Queen’s Director (to 2019) at the beginning of 2013. On November 28, 2017, Woolf announced that he would end his Principalship at the end of June 2019. His successor was Patrick Deane, and appointed Principal Emeritus by the Queen’s Board of Trustees. He was conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Queen’s for his contribution in higher education and scholarship.
Daniel Woolf graduated from St. Paul’s High School, Winnipeg in the year 1976. He earned the Master of Arts Honours degree in History from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario in the year 1980. He also was awarded the D.Phil. on Modern History from Oxford University in 1983. There, he was taught by the famous historian of 17th-century England and the Master of St Peter’s College, Oxford, Gerald Aylmer. Alongside the historians John Morrill and Paul Slack, Woolf would eventually co-edit the annual celebration in honour of Aylmer (1993). One of Woolf’s contemporary who attended St Peter’s was David Eastwood who was Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham’s University of Birmingham. Woolf was named an honorary fellow at St Peter’s in 2009.
Woolf’s administrative career began as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at Dalhousie (1998–99), a period including six months as Acting Dean of that Faculty. In 1999 he moved to McMaster University, serving for three years as Dean of its Faculty of Humanities. In 2002, he was appointed Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta, succeeding Kenneth Norrie, who had recently become McMaster’s Provost. Woolf was reappointed in 2007, and commenced his second term in 2008 following a year’s administrative leave during which he returned to his research. In January 2009 it was announced that he was resigning the position to take up the Principalship of Queen’s.
