Tani (born on February 1st January 1961) is an American engineer, and also an NASA astronaut. Though he was birthed in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, Tani considers Lombard, Illinois, to be his home town. Together with Peggy Whitson, Tani conducted the 100th spacewalk at the International Space Station.

Tani was a passenger with STS-108 in 2001. She spent more than eleven days of space, which included more than four EVA hours during one spacewalk. The STS-108 Endeavour mission (December 5-17 the 5th of December, 2001) was the 12th shuttle flight that went on to go to the International Space Station. In the course of the mission, Tani was assigned as the Mission Specialist 2. Endeavour’s team delivered Expedition 4’s Expedition 4 crew to the station, and then returned their Expedition 3 crew. The crew moved three tons of equipment including logistics, science experiments and even logistical equipment of the Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module to the station. Tani was on a spacewalk in order in order to cover the thermal blankets with ISS Solar Gimbals for Arrays. STS-108 was completed within the 185th Earth orbits, covering 4.8 million miles over 283 hours and minutes, which included the EVA time of four hours and twelve minutes.

His parents, Rose and Henry N. Tani, are both deceased. During World War II, they and their children were relocated from their California farm to the Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah as part of the Japanese American internment program of the U.S. government. They lived for several months in converted horse stables at the Tanforan Racetrack. On December 19, 2007, during Tani’s stay on the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 16, he was informed by the ground team that his mother had been killed when a freight train collided with her car.

Following his return from STS-108, Tani was assigned as the Expedition 9 backup flight engineer. Tani was eventually assigned to Expedition 16 as flight engineer, and launched to the station aboard STS-120 on October 23,

  1. Tani completed one EVA with the crew of STS-120, and four additional spacewalks during his increment aboard the space station. Originally scheduled to return to Earth with the crew of STS-122 in December, the mission was delayed due to engine cutoff sensor issues during countdown. Instead, it launched on February 7. Tani returned on STS-122 on February 20, 2008.

Awarded the position of an astronaut in April 1996 by NASA at the beginning of April, 1996. Tani was assigned to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in August 1996. After two years of evaluation and training and a flight evaluation, he was able to be selected for an assignment as mission specialist in 1998. He was responsible for technical tasks in The Astronaut Office Computer Support Branch, as well as the Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) Branch and was an Crew Support Astronaut in Expedition 2.

After Tani completed the bachelor’s degree at MIT He worked for Hughes Aircraft Corporation in El Segundo, California as a design engineer within the Space and Communications group. In 1986, he went back to MIT and earned his master’s degrees in mechanical engineering the year 1988 specialising in groups and human-centered decision-making. After graduating, Tani worked for Bolt, Beranek and Newman in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the department of experimental psychology. The year 1988 saw Tani became a part of the Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC) in Dulles, Virginia, initially as a senior structure engineer, then later as the director of mission operations in charge of Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS). In his current position Tani was the TOS leader for the flight operations in conjunction with NASA/JSC mission controls in support of the launch of the TOS/ACTS payload on the STS-51 mission that took place in September 1993. Tani later joined the Pegasus program within OSC as Launch Operations Manager. In this role Tani was responsible in the design of guidelines and restrictions for the launch of an air launched Pegasus non- manned rocket. Tani was also responsible for developing, training and directing the engineering team that were in charge of the control and launch rooms.

In May 2002, Tani served as an aquanaut on the NEEMO 2 (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) crew aboard the Aquarius underwater laboratory. Tani and his fellow crew members lived and worked for one week beneath the Atlantic Ocean.
