Daniel Ionita is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on January 16, 1960 in Bucharest, Romania. Daniel Ionita was born in Bucharest, Romania on January 16 1960. The family of Ionita left Romania in the year 1980. They initially left to Austria and then settling at New Zealand (from 1981 to 1988) before settling in Australia after 1989. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree with Honors in Psychology from Griffith University in Brisbane, finishing in 1997. He then was a lecturer/senior speaker in the field of Organisational Improvement & Excellence as part of the Lean Six SIgma Business Excellence Institute (LSSBEI.COM) as well as The Business Practice Unit of the University of Technology Sydney in 2005.

Daniel Ionita has also been published as poet of his own and has published two bilingual books of poetry in English as well as Romanian, Hanging Between the Stars (Minerva Publishing House 2013, 2013.) as well as ContraDiction (Pim Publishing 2016, 2016) and an exclusive volume in Romanian Insula Cuvintelor Acasa the Island of Words from Home (Limes Publishing in 2017).

Initially, and somewhat controversially, Daniel Ionita became known for his bilingual (English/Romanian) anthology of Romanian poetry titled Testament – Anthology of Modern Romanian Verse, published by Minerva Publishing House. The first edition (Bucharest 2012) covered 50 poets; the second edition (2015) expanded the scope of the anthology to 93 poets. These volumes span 160 years of Romanian poetry (from about 1850 to the present), translated to English with the assistance of English linguists and literature specialists Eva Foster, Daniel Reynaud, and Rochelle Bews. The anthology includes the best- known Romanian poets, as well as some emergent, less-recognised ones.

Perhaps because of these differing views, Ionita has received a considerable amount of exposure in the media, with various television channels (TVR, SperantaTV, TVR International, TVR Transilvania, Cotidianul TV, Nașul-TV among others) and radio stations (Radio Romania Actualități, SmartFM in Romania, the ABC and SBS stations in Australia, ARCA TV from the US) broadcasting about his work, and interviewing on a regular basis when he visits Romania. This exposure increased especially after the formation, in 2014, of the Australian- Romanian Academy for Culture, a body promoting specific cultural cooperation projects involving artists, writers and academics from Australia and Romania. Daniel Ionita’s work has also been translated into other media: singers- songwriters Catalin Condurache, Sandy Deac and Adrian Ivanițchi have written and performed songs on some of Daniel Ionita’s more romantic poems.

The debate centered around the viewpoint of literary political concerning the selection of poets and poems , and consequently, how representative the anthology contained from the perspective of Romanian poetry. Many reviewers were highly favorable, including Alex Stefanescu (“Testament – Anthology of Modern Romanian Verse is the best of Romanian poetry “… “no significant Romanian poet is left out” in addition to “I am keeping Daniel Ionita’s book on my desk as a source] ]”), Lucian Vasilescu (“The work of the writer of Testament is an exceptional one and, if not exclusive exciting and worthy of awe”), Radu Voinescu (“one cannot doubt the unity of this collection”; “after the success of the first edition [Daniel Ionita’s] anthology has all the hallmarks necessary to successfully represent Romanian culture to a level which we have all desired, for a very long time”); Florin Ionescu, speaking of the second edition, stating that “the present volume is an authentic overview of the poetry diversity of Romanian literature”I and finally, Melania Cuc “Through the clear and professional approach, with exceptional dexterity in the use and linkage of syntagma, the poet-translator Daniel Ionita manages to bring to the light of print, and take to the world, an book of true value for us as a nation”

Daniel Ionita (born 16 January 1960, Bucharest, Romania) is a Australian writer and poet from Romanian origin. He has been published in bilingual form in both Australia as well as Romania. Ionita is well-known as a writer, specifically poetry and poems in translation as well as his involvement in culture as the head of the Australian-Romanian Academy of Culture.

It is important to note that, besides Voncu’s unsubstantiated claims however, there is no Romanian literary critic or reviewer had ever discussed the depth of Testament’s qualities in its reinterpretation into English or the way it is interpreted to the subject. But one English reviewing reviewer remarked that “…[Testamentis able to transfer an accent that is distinct Romanian into English and allows that an authentic Romanian voice to sound authentic in the Englishspoken languages… This book offers a glimpse of Romania’s soul.” Furthermore two critics, Pavel Perfil and Alex Stefanescu discuss the launch of the book Testament in Australia and point out particularly the performance performed by the actress Tug Dumly, of a passage from it (Eminescu’s “Gloss”) during the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney to mark the nation’s national Day (1 Dec 2012) is an extraordinary chance to showcase Romanian poetry in the Antipodes. In his comprehensive critical analysis of the work of Mihai Eminescu, Stefanescu reads all poem of Gloss as the English version of Testament in order to demonstrate to his readers how the technically challenging work is able to be translated successfully into English.

An even larger edition, covering 120 poets, of Testament – Anthology of Romanian Verse (having dropped the word “modern” from the title), presented only in English, was released in the United States in March 2017, with the support of the Australian Romanian Academy of Culture and the Romanian Cultural Institute, which organized its New York book launch.
