In the latter part of August, Christensen placed a 14-day stop to grizzly bear hunting throughout Wyoming and Idaho following the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lifted the federal protections for grizzlies within Yellowstone National Park areas in 2017. On September 24, 2018, Christensen released a 48-page ruling that restored the protections, as well as eliminating the hunt entirely, citing Fish and Wildlife’s analysis of the risks to grizzly bears were not adequate and they “failed to make a reasoned decision” when assessing the implications of removing Yellowstone animals from the protected status.

The Senate approved his nomination on December 5, 2011, through a voice vote. He was appointed on the 6th of December, 2011. He was the Chief Judge beginning March 19th, 2013 until March 19, 2020.
