His father Norbert B. Reicher was a doctor and his mother was an educator who retired. Reicher received an B.A. with a major in Biology at Dartmouth College and a J.D. in Biology from Stanford Law School. He also completed his studies at University of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and MIT. He was part of the very first group to kayak down the Yangtze River in China and an expedition sponsored by National Geographic that made history as the first group to traverse through the whole 1888-mile Rio Grande. The college friend of Reicher’s senator Rob Portman (R-OH) was an expedition participant on both occasions.
After Clinton in 2001, he was a consultant to the Clinton Administration in 2001, He was a consultant for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works as well as a visiting fellow in the World Resources Institute.
Reicher also served as an advisor to the 2008 Obama campaign and a member of the Obama Transition Team where he focused on the energy portions of the Obama stimulus package.
Dan William Reicher is an American lawyer who was U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in the Clinton Administration. Reicher is currently Executive Director of the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University, a joint center of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, where he also holds faculty positions. Reicher joined Stanford in 2011 from Google, where he served since 2007 as Director of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives for the company’s venture Google.org.
From 1997-2001, Reicher was Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at DOE. In his position as Assistant Secretary, he supervised each year over $1 billion worth of energy research and development, and deployment in the field of distributed generation, renewable energy as well as energy efficiency. Under his leadership, DOE launched the Wind Powering America Initiative and the Geopowering the West Initiative, implemented new equipment and appliances performance standards and supervised the Million Solar Roofs Initiative and the Industries of the Future Initiative. Reicher was a part of the U.S. Delegation to the Climate Change Negotiations, Co-Chair of the U.S Biomass Research and Development Board as well as an active part of the Board for the industry-government Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles.
