Resigning from bobsleigh following the 2002 Winter Olympics, Steele is currently the Head of Track and Coach at the University of Northern Iowa. Prior to UNI, Steele was the Associate Head Coach at the University of Oregon. In 2009, Steele won”the” National men’s coach of the year after helping coach Oregon’s Oregon males into winning an NCAA Indoor title. Steele has also been named as the West Region Women’s Coach of the of the Year for 2009, for helping coach Oregon women to their first Pacific-10 title since 1992. Oregon females to their very first Pacific-10 victory since. In the same year, he also coached Ashton Eaton to the NCAA Decathlon title, and Brianne Theisen to win the NCAA Heptathlon title. It was the only the first ever in NCAA history that both multi-successful athletes were from the same school. Both the 2005 and 2007 NCAA West Regional Assistant Coach of the year for men’s sprints and Hurdles as well as in 2008, the Pac-10 coach of the year has established him as one of the top national coaches. Steele has coached players to 8 individual NCAA championships as well as 24 conference titles. 31 All-America awards and 32 school records and five Pac-10 team championships along with one NCAA team championship.

An Illinois native, born in Sherrard, Illinois, Steele graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in sociology. In the 1990s, Steele also competed in athletics . He first in the 400-meter obstacles (winning his 1992 NCAA championship) and then later in the decathlon, securing for United States Olympic trials for the 1992, 1996 as well as the 2000 Summer Olympics and achieving his best results of finishing fifth in the decathlon during his 2000 trials. Steele was even ninth in the decathlon during the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville, Spain.
Since 1993 Steele relocated out of Illinois and moved to Eugene, Oregon to train all-time in track and field. In 2001, he became an athletics coach on a voluntary basis of Oregon’s University of Oregon. Between coaching stints, Steele competed in bobsleigh for the U.S. both in 1998 and 2002. In 2002’s Winter Olympics, he earned bronze in the four-man competition which brought to an end a 46-year drought of medals that had been awaited by America. United States in that sport.
Stroke: On July 28, 2017, Steele nearly died from a massive hemorrhagic stroke. He was forced to step away from coaching since the stroke. Steele spent 2.5 months in the hospital relearning how to walk and talk.
