According to the annual report of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, Washington State saw 18 murders with knives in comparison to 95 deaths committed with firearms.

On February 20, 2018, while arguing against new gun regulations in the State Legislature during a regularly scheduled news conference in the state capital, Olympia, Kristiansen told the media that “More people are actually killed by knives than by guns.” This comment was in response to a mass shooting that happened just a week earlier in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed.

In 2009, just prior to getting campaign donations from Rairdon Auto Group, Representative Kristiansen cosponsored HB2182 with Rep. Kristiansen. The intent behind HB 2182 was cut the business and operation tax for automotive dealers and service providers. Legislative documents refer to HB 2182 to be “AN ACT Relating to reducing the business and occupation tax rate for retailers, wholesalers, and service providers of motor vehicles” as well as an amending of RCW 82.04.860.

In 2010 Washington State officials received a formal complaint concerning the campaign finances of Representative Kristiansen. In accordance with state law, contributions from one business were legally restricted to $600 for each election. Rairdon Auto Group, however, contributed four times that amount. Rairdon Auto Group, however made contributions four times the amount. This was done through the writing of four checks totaling $1600, the checks coming from four different Rairdon dealerships. The dealerships shared ownership as well as directors, while the checks were dated the same way. In the course of Representative Kristiansen’s campaign for the state legislature the autonomy of dealerships was brought into question, as was in the legitimacy of utilizing multiple locations for business to circumvent the limits on contributions to campaigns.

On March 6, 2018, two weeks after the “… more people are killed by knives than guns” story he told of Norway, Dan Kristiansen announced he will not seek re- election in November. The 39th District representative has stepped down from his role, but will complete his term.
