Branch (born on March 5, 1958) was an ex-member of the Texas House of Representatives from Dallas, Texas. He was first elected in 2002 as a Republican He was a member of District 108 between 2003 and the year 2015.

In the autumn of 2008, Branch was joined by Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa in leading “Operation Comeback”, a nationwide effort to prevent the 50,000 students who attend school each one year, from leaving high schools.

Branch served as chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education from 2009 to 2014 and served on the Calendars, Elections and Redistricting Committees, as well as the House Select Committee on State Sovereignty. Branch also serves on the Legislative Budget Board. Prior to the 81st Session, he served three terms as the Chair of Budget and Oversight on House Public Education Committee and served as Vice Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education.

On July 14, 2013, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced his intention to run for Governor of Texas in the 2014 Texas gubernatorial election. On July 25, 2013, Dan Branch officially announced his candidacy in the 2014 election.

Branch took over the seat in 2002, when incumbent Republican Kenn George decided to step down after two terms in order to contest unsuccessfully during the Republican primary for Texas land commissioner. He was defeated the race to Jerry E. Patterson, who was then the state senator for Houston. This was Branch’s first run for the state legislature. He was elected every time until 2014 when he was running for attorney general.

Branch is an alumni of his time at the Southern Methodist University School of Law (now the Dedman School of Law) and was an editor in the legal journal. He graduated from the Institute on Comparative Political & Economic Systems at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In the 81st session of the legislature, Branch was the author of House Bill 51, also called the “Tier One Universities” Bill. The bill stated that seven”new” research universities would be competing for additional funding with the aim of being able to join those of the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University as nationally recognized research institutions. The seven schools are The University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Dallas as well as Texas Tech University, the University of Texas at Arlington as well as The University of Texas at El Paso as well as The University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas Tech University, the University of Houston and Texas Tech University. Following the signing of HB 51 to law the Governor Rick Perry said “[House Bill 51] will go down in the history books as one that truly is improving education in our state.”

In 2009, Branch was selected by Texas House members from eleven north Texas counties to co-chair the Dallas Area Legislative Delegation (DALD), at the delegation’s first meeting of the 81st session. Branch replaced retired member Fred Hill (R-Richardson) as the Republican co-chair. He was re-elected in 2011 to serve as co-chair.
