She attended convent school and also attended the Universidad Centroamericana in Nicaragua where she graduated with a master’s degree in psychology. She was awarded a post-graduate certificate from INCAE which is a division that is part of Harvard University in Central Americain Central America. She also completed her studies at the Academia Dante Alighieri, and in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Her work has appeared in literary journals and magazines throughout Latin America, the Caribbean as well as in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia as well as Viet Nam. Poetry from her collection has been featured in more than eighty anthologies, in 30 different languages. This includes the highly acclaimed Oxford Book of Latin American Poetry. She has read poetry and lecture series around the world, in a variety of places across and around the U.S., and was one of the featured poets for the Bill Moyer’s PBS show The Language of Life.
Author of a variety of poetry collections in Spanish and an assortment of political essays She also edited the first complete anthology composed of Nicaraguan women poets to be published within Latin America. Her most recent poetry collection, La violenta espuma, was released in Madrid by the renowned Spanish poet publisher Visor in the latter half of December 2017. In addition she was featured on director Jenny Murray’s award-winning documentary!Las sandinistas! scheduled to air on PBS.

She was active in the struggle against the Somoza regime in the 1970s. She then became a member of the Sandinista Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1973. She was forced to exile in Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica. In Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution in 1979, she was a soldier with The FSLN (Sandinista National Liberation Front) and was the voice and program director of secret radio station Radio Sandino during the final 1979 Sandinista offensive.
