Her election was on an SPD ticket and was part of members of the Party of European Socialists group.
Since 2015, Roth-Behrendt had been working as a Special Advisor in Development Cooperation to European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis in the process of reforming the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE). The year 2016 saw her named to the commission’s Independent Ethical Committee.
During her time in the parliament, Roth-Behrendt worked on the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. The year 1997 was the time she was chair of the inquiry committee that was formed on the European Commission’s approach to dealing with the BSE outbreak. She was later appointed as the reporter for an amendment to the EU medical device regulations.

Roth-Behrendt was a Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to the year 2014. Between 2004 and 2007 and then from 2009 until 2012, she was one of the fourteen Vice-Presidents of European Parliament, first under the direction of the president Josep Borrell, then Jerzy Buzek.
In addition to her committee duties Roth-Behrendt also served as a member of the Parliament’s delegation on interactions to Australia as well as New Zealand from 1994 until 2004. In 2013 she was one of six candidates to be the post of European Ombudsman. However, the post ended up going to Emily O’Reilly instead.
