In 1978, he was performing an engagement in the tiny fishing village located in Batsfjord within Northern Norway when a fight was fought. Spantell was able to intervene to disperse the two fighters, and received an extremely hard attack to the throat that damaged his larynx. The singer’s career was a bit ended, but he was able to force himself to sing on the hit song Sol with the group Strikk that was a massive radio hit at the end of summer 1980.
In 2004 the up-and-coming Norwegian rappers Jaa9 and OnklP contacted him about doing a new version of his 1973-hit Kjendis-party. The song became the national breakthrough for the young rappers and one of the most played songs of 2004. Spantell himself made several concert appearances with the boys and its success laid the foundation for a comeback on the Norwegian music scene.

Between 1975 and 1978, he joined the hugely popular Pa Treff-gang comprised consisting of four singers (the remaining three comprising Inger Lise Rypdal Stein Ingebrigtsen and Gro Anita Schonn) who released several albums that featured cover versions of popular songs from around the world which were often translated into Norwegian (during this time, the group recorded 9 albums). The band toured extensively throughout the decade, usually with Pa Treff. He was also a part of in four times the Norwegian finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. In the past, he was lead singer in another dance group, Torry Enghs.

At the age of twelve, He was influenced to follow The Shadows to create his own band with an instrumental name, Beatboys which featured the rhythm guitar. He was a huge lover of The Beatles he later joined the group Misfits in 1964. There, they remained a band until co-founding the group Happie in the year 1967. In writing many of his own music, he was clearly influenced by The Beatles as well as vocal harmony and the psychedelia that was prevalent at the time. However , he would remain musician, most notably as the lead singer in the dance group Kjell Karlsens Orkester. In 1973, he received the Kjendis-party song, an Norwegian rendition of the popular Ricky Nelson song Garden Party.
