Hand was a student at Alabama from 2014 to 2017 under the direction of head Coach Nick Saban. In his freshman season in Alabama, Hand was a regular player in the Crimson Tide defensive line rotation and was a part of nine games as a defensive end. He began his college career by making one individual tackle, which was in the game against West Virginia. Hand was able to record seven tackles in the entire year, which included four stops on his own as well as two tackles (-10 metres). Hand was in the starting lineup for all 11 of his games he took part in 2017 and was unable to play due to a knee injury. He recorded 27 tackles as well as 3.5 defensive tackles and three sacks during the entire season.

The Washington Post made Hand the focus of a documentary series called First and 17, which took him in and out of on the pitch “giving an inside look at the challenges facing a top recruit juggling school, football and his senior year.”
