In the year 2011, Cristina was granted a research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to continue her research project called ‘Design to combat Desertification’. Her research was then geared towards studies on the research and registration of Portuguese areas with a very low density of population. She also began creating the most powerful contemporary art pieces and textiles became her signature style from the beginning. The regular usage of industrial fabric, satin ribbons, and lacing has been a distinctive aspect of her artistic narrative.
The eclecticism which characterises her work can be traced back to her studies in Architecture, Medieval and Renaissance History and Contemporary Art. She graduated in Architecture (2014) and completed a Masters degree in Medieval and Renaissance History (2007) at the University of Porto, Portugal. Later she moved to Manchester, United Kingdom, where she lectured at university and was awarded a PhD in Art and Design at Manchester School of Art (2016).
In her career as an artist, Cristina Rodrigues worked in partnership with a variety of private and public organizations as well as many of the most important Portuguese brands. Cristina has been in constant contact with the Porto lace mill , Fabrica de Rendas, Portuense since the year 2011. The mill still makes cotton lace using the original industrial revolution machines, which were acquired from a mill located in Leicester, United Kingdom. In the past, Cristina Rodrigues collaborated with different brands, including Licor Beirao, the artist created a massive iron sculpture named The Fountain of Happiness with Licor Beirao glass bottles; ICEL Cutlery, a brand for cutlery and the Portuguese footwear brand FLY London that has inspired her art work called Urban Dwellers.
