Cristina Castagna is one of the most popular and richest Mountaineer who was born on December 23, 1977 in San Quirico d'Orcia, Tuscany, Italy. Cristina “El Grio” Castagna (23 December 1977 18th July, 2009.) was an Italian mountaineer who was one of the very first Italian woman to scale Makalu. Her birthplace was in San Quirico di Valdagno. She passed away in 2009, in 2009 on Broad Peak, after reaching the summit.

Castagna along with Giampaolo Casarotto were planning to Giampaolo Casarotto and Giampaolo Castagna Broad Peak and Gasherbrum I in 2009 during their adventure. Prior to leaving with a note that was later discovered by family members Castagna pleaded to be placed on the mountain in case of an accident that could be catastrophic.

In 2004, she again climbed with Vielmo and this time, to the top of Shishapangma and alongside Michele Fait. In 2005, she climbed Gasherbrum II, alongside Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. In 2006 she tried to climb Lhotse in a second time with Silvio Mondinelli ], Marco Confortola and Giampaolo Corona. However, the cold and frostbite kept her from climbing at 8,120 meters (26,640 feet). In 2008, she completed her Makalu attempt, accompanied by Casarotto. At 8,000m (26,000 feet) she was struck by cold, but was able to meet Waldemar Niclevicz and Irivan Burda who assisted her. On May 11, it was her first attempt as an Italian woman to climb the top of Makalu and then suffer cold feet that left the woman in hospital for a few weeks.
