Cristina Monet Zilkha was born Cristina Monet Palaci on January 17th, 1956 in Manhattan to the writer- illustrator Dorothy Monet and French psychoanalyst Jacques Palaci. She was raised throughout her native United States, England, Italy and France. Cristina was a drama student in the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and was a student at Harvard University. When she was on absence from Harvard she was involved involved in a crash on a motorcycle that resulted in the death of a friend and she chose not to return to Harvard.

Cristina’s album Sleep It Off, which she kept her humorous tone was recorded by Don Was and released in 1984, featuring a sleeve that was designed created by Jean-Paul Gourde (a year prior to the time he employed the same concept in the case of Grace Jones). The lyrics, a majority written by Cristina was satirical of urban luxuries with a sometimes sarcastic, dry delivery. The album was a failure and Cristina went back to her home life along with her spouse in Texas. The track “What’s a Girl to Do?” From this album was featured within the Ladytron compilation Softcore Jukebox in 2003 and was described by the critic Richie Unterberger as “arguably her signature track”. The album was released again on the album in 2004, with six additional tracks and two of them were written (and one of them co-written) by Robert Palmer. In 2005 she collaborated in a collaboration with New York musician Alex Gimeno who is known as Ursula 10000 for”Ursula 10000,” a track from “Urgent/Anxious” off his Here Comes Tomorrow album.

She later contributed learned essays and reviews to publications such as London’s Times Literary Supplement while battling autoimmune disorders, including relapsing polychondritis. Her two albums for ZE were reissued in 2004, after Michael Esteban revived the label.

Cristina died in New York on March 31, 2020, at the age of 64, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Although initially released as a joke, “Disco Clone” was an instant hit and inspired ZE to release an album of full length in the year 1980. It was produced with August Darnell of Kid Creole and The Coconuts, and including songs composed by Cristina. The album was later reissued in the form of Doll in the Box. Cristina was also released on 12″ single, a cover version to Peggy Lee’s “Is All There is?” with new, satirical , lyrics. Its writers Leiber and Stoller filed a lawsuit and were successful in getting it removed for a number of years. Then She released her cover version of”Drive My Car” by the Beatles’ “Drive My Car” (also known in the form of “Baby You Can Drive My Car”). The track was released by her “Things Fall Apart”, composed by Was (Not Was), on Z’s Christmas Record, in 1981.
