Craig Steven Wright (born October 1970) is an Australian businessman and computer scientist. Wright has made public claims that he was the primary member of the team responsible for the creation of bitcoin, as well as the identity for the fake name Satoshi Nakamoto. These claims are seen as untrue by a large portion of the media and cryptocurrency community.

In 2004 Wright was found guilty of contempt of the court through the Supreme Court of New South Wales. The court sentenced him to jail for 28 days for violating an injunction which was preventing him from speaking to clients of DeMorgan Information Security Systems, after which he resigned in 2003. His sentence was then suspended under the conditions of performing 250 hours of service to the community. After appealing the decision the verdict has been upheld since 2005, and as a result of an appeal before the High Court of Australia in the year 2006.

Wright was the CEO of the technology firm Hotwire Preemptive Intelligence Group (Hotwire PE), which planned to launch Denariuz Bank, the world’s first bitcoin-based bank, though it encountered regulatory difficulties with the Australian Tax Office and failed in 2014. Wright is the founder of cryptocurrency company DeMorgan Ltd., which claimed to receive $54 million AUD in tax incentives via AusIndustry.

In December 2015, two parallel investigations by Wired and Gizmodo suggested that Wright may have been the inventor of bitcoin. Subsequent reporting, however, raised concerns that Wright was engaged in an elaborate hoax.

Wright states that he holds an doctorate in theology, classical and comparative studies which was awarded in 2003 however, he does not specify the institution that awarded this doctorate. Wright claimed to possess an PhD in the field of computer science, from Charles Sturt University on his LinkedIn profile in 2015. However, the university stated to Forbes that it awarded Wright two master’s degrees, no doctorate. Wright’s PhD from CSU was awarded in February of this year.
