Perks became a professional in 1993 and was a player on the second tier of the Nike Tour for several seasons. Perks joined the PGA Tour after a tie for 35th place at the 1999 qualifying School was enough to earn him a Tour card in the season 2000.
In 2002, at the age of 35, Perks unexpectedly won The Players Championship One of the most famous tournaments in the PGA Tour. Perks chipped in for an eagle and put down an 25-foot (7.5 meters) birdie at the Island Green, then chipped into par to take the win with two strokes. He was on par 72 at the end of the hole, and only managed two pars on the final 14 holes. Beginning the year with a 256 mark according to the World Rankings, Perks climbed from 203 to 64 after winning and was named New Zealand’s Sportsman of the Year for 2002. The award was a five-year exclusion from touring, but it was his only win from his 202 appearances.
