At the end of August, 2003 having recorded three album releases, Montoya left Everclear. In 2004 Montoya created a new group named Tri-Polar along with Sweaty Nipples members Scotty Heard on guitar and Brian Lehfeldt on drums. The group began recording in the latter half of 2004, however, a few months before the self-titled release on the 27th of May the 27th of May, the band’s guitarist Scotty Heard was forced to leave the band due to personal reasons. In search of a replacement Montoya was drawn towards Kevin Hahn of Red Sector and his former co-bandmate with The Strain. Tri-Polar continues to be active and performs in many cities on the West Coast, including the city where the band members are from, Portland.

On a 1998 Australian tour Montoya became involved in a fight backstage with Alexakis after an audience member threw a lit explosive onto the stage. the tour was ended. Montoya was not part of the group for the subsequent tour in The United Kingdom, with David LoPrinzi taking over.

Since the age of a child, Montoya wanted to play music from an early age. While he had initially been fascinated by drums, a dearth of bass players in the area prompted him to pick the instrument. He purchased an amp and bass guitar at the age of sixteenyears old, and he paid for it with the money he made from mowing lawns. After graduation from the high school of his choice, Montoya became a member of the band called Soul Hammer and planned a move to Portland, Oregon, but was kicked out of the band when the demo tape was completed. He began looking for a bass job within The Rocket, a Northwest newspaper, and discovered an advertisement from Art Alexakis, the former leader of Colorfinger. Alexakis was joined by him and Drummer Scott Cuthbert, and together they created Everclear. The trio recorded numerous B-sides, and also performed live and local shows. In 1993 the trio recorded World of Noise, which was recorded at a friend’s basement studio.

Since 1994, Everclear introduced a number of changes. Cuthbert had been replaced with the former Jollymon Drummer Greg Eklund. The group also relocated away from Tim/Kerr Records to Capitol. It was 1995 when the band’s new label Everclear launched its U.S. debut album, Sparkle and Fade with singles “Heroin Girl,” “Heartspark Dollarsign,” “You Make Me Feel Like a Whore,” and “Santa Monica”. The album gained a following in an alternative music scene like their 1997 follow-up”So Many for the afterglow.

In 2006, Montoya helped formed Castella with Hahn and frontman Ryan Andew of Sidestar. They worked with producer Joe Chiccarelli to record How Did We Get Here during 2007. The record received praise from the critics for its songwriting and production, and several songs from the record found their way onto TV series and movie soundtracks.
