Craig Chaquico or Chaquico (/tS @’k i (pronounced s oU / ch@-KEE Soh; born on September 26 1954) is a famous American musician, guitarist and composer as well as record producer from Portuguese descent. He was a founding musician in the rock groups Jefferson Starship and Starship and the only musician in the two bands to perform on every single song, album and tour as well as on video. From 1993 onwards, Chaquico has pursued a solo career as a modern musician and composer of acoustic jazz.
Names like Jefferson Starship was legally retired by the band’s members in March 1985 , after Paul Kantner left the band and changed the name to “Starship”. The remaining band members as well as Chaquico was still in the group. Starship recorded hits like “We Built this City”, “Sara”, and “Nothing’s Going to Stop Us Now”. Chaquico and Starship appeared in MTV videos regularly and were featured in the initial MTV Spring Break special in Daytona Beach in 1986.
He began a solo career that explored world music, New Age, and contemporary jazz. His first album, Acoustic Highway (1993), was the number one Independent New Age Album of the Year in Billboard Magazine and a number one on the Billboard New Age Albums chart, while his second album, Acoustic Planet (1994), reached number one on the same chart and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Age Album. The album borrowed from African and Native American music. The song “Just One World” was launched into space on a satellite that was part of NASA’s Space Ark program. His most recent album, Fire Red Moon, was Chaquico’s first blues album and it reached number fifteen on the Billboard blues chart.

When Chaquico was a member of the newly-formed Jefferson Starship touring band in 1974, Chaquico expected to go back to school following a tour. But instead, Slick and Kantner invited Chaquico to join the group for a long time. Chaquico was a major player in the launch of Jefferson Starship into commercial success. The group later earned 20 gold and platinum albums, including Red Octopus which was certified double-platinum in the year 1995. Chaquico is the sole member who appeared in every album, recording tour, concert, and music video. He composed or co-wrote Jefferson Starship’s hit songs “Fast Buck Freddy,” “Love Too Good,” “Rock Music,” “Jane,” “Find Your Way Back,” “Layin’ It on the Line” as well as “Light the Sky on Fire”. Jefferson Starship performed the song “Light the Sky on Fire” to”Star Wars: The Holiday Special.” Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978.

Chaquico began performing guitar at clubs when he reached the age of fourteen years old. Then, two years after, he was invited to be a part of his English teacher Jack Traylor’s new group, Steelwind, which performed in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Areas. Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane witnessed him perform as well and invited him for join a series of recording sessions as well as performances. The first time Chaquico recorded together with Kantner along with Grace Slick was in 1971 on their album Sunfighter which was which was followed by Baron von Tollbooth and The Chrome Nun. He performed on Slick’s solo album Manhole which came out in 1974. At this time there were members from the Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash frequently appeared in concert as well as recordings. Slick was a part of Jerry Garcia, David Crosby, David Freiberg, and Carlos Santana.
On the 22nd of April, 1974 San Francisco Chronicle music critic Joel Selvin wrote, “Guitars are the best thing about live rock bands and Chaquico is easily the best thing about Starship.” Carvin Guitars started placing ads on Guitar Player magazine and Guitar for the Guitarist Practicing in the 1980s, featuring Chaquico as well as the Carvin Double Neck electric guitars and V220 X100B stacks. They were their top-selling models through the 1980s.
Chaquico left Starship in 1991, and soon after, the band announced that it would quit. Having become disappointed with the musical direction Starship was going, Chaquico formed Big Bad Wolf, a hard rock band which recorded one album before disbanding.
