On the 12th of January 2007 episode of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, Bundrage faced an ex-welterweight champion Chris Smith. In a very close contest, Bundrage was able to overcome a sixth round fear and then return to injure Smith by a left hook to Smith’s jaw during the final seconds of the sixth round. Bundrage beat Smith by a split decision.
On November 13, 2008, Bundrage would face the respected journeyman fighter Grady Brewer. Bundrage lost the bout via controversial split decision that not only did many think he deserved, but led on punch-stats via a margin that was unexpected.

In 2006 professional boxer Cornelius “K9” Bundrage was a contestant in the ESPN’s “The Contender” Season 2 boxing reality show alongside Hall of Fame hosts Sugar Ray Leonard and Sylvester Stallone in Hollywood, California. In the course of the show, Bundrage was watched by millions of fans every week for 14 weeks straight. He was also designated as a “fan favorite” out of 16 boxers from all over in the United States. Bundrage was among the last chosen and was placed as a member of the Blue Team. To avenge his misfortune the team suffered, he offered to be the very first member from his group to compete at this tournament (quoting Matthew 20:16, “And the last shall be first”) and ended up fighting Michael Clark. In a tense battle over five rounds, the two were virtually tied in points. Bundrage defeated Clark to the ground with a huge punch to his temple which earned the fifth round, based with two of the three judge’s scorecards . The result was the majority of judges (2 judges declared Bundrage was the winner, and one judge claimed it was an even draw). Bundrage was able to move on through the tournament, whereas Clark was required to put down his gloves and head home.
The 11th of July, 2007 “Wednesday Night Fights,” K9 took on Joel Julio, a hard-hitting 22-year-old junior middleweight who was rated the top 3 fighter in all sanctioning bodies. The fight took place after the ESPY awards at the Kodak Theater. Bundrage used the chance to win on three weeks notice and lost 37 pounds in a 3 week time. K9 was a total jerk and it was not too much, and ran for 8 rounds of pure heart. The 2:28 mark in the 8th round Julio took on Bundrage by a clean long right hand. Julio was able to jump at Bundrage and caused the referee to call for a end in the fight.
Then just a month later on December 13, 2008, Bundrage flew thousands of miles to Germany on 2 weeks notice to later upset previously unbeaten prospect European Champion Zaurbek Baysangurov via 5th round KO in an IBF eliminator for the #2 mandatory spot.

In his third defense of the IBF title, Bundrage would lose the title to Ishe Smith via majority decision on February 23, 2013. He was docked a point in the second round for hitting Smith while Smith was on the canvas after a push/slip between the two fighters. The scores read 111-116, 114-114 and 111-116.
