On the 23rd of July in 2014 on July 23, 2014, the Tigers exchanged Knebel along with Jake Thompson to the Texas Rangers in exchange for the reliever Joakim Soria. Following this trade Knebel received a contract with the Rangers Triple-A team. called the Round Rock Express. Knebel injured the ligament of collateral under the ulnar the elbow while throwing elbow in the month of August. putting an end to his season.

Knebel is a student at The University of Texas in 2011 and played in the college game with the Texas Longhorns baseball team. He was the Longhorn’s closest when he was a freshman, and matched J. Brent Cox and Charlie Thames’ school records for the most saves in a single season , with 19. Knebel was named NCBWA Stopper of the Year as well as the Young Player of the Year from NBCWA as well as Collegiate Baseball Magazine. Knebel received First Team All- American and first-team All-Big 12 Conference awards.
Knebel was an effective Longhorn closer in the 2012 season, coming in having nine stops and an 2.08 earned run rate. Although he was unable to achieve the same level of excellence as his first season, he did earn first-team All-Big 12 accolades.
Knebel was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as the 39th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. This supplemental pick was the first traded draft slot in Major League history. The pick was included in a 2012 trade between the Tigers and the Miami Marlins, which included Aníbal Sánchez, Omar Infante, and Jacob Turner. Knebel played for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps, the Double-A Erie SeaWolves and the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens before being called up by the Tigers. He made his major league debut on May 24, 2014 against the Texas Rangers.
