In celebration of the passing of fellow Beaufort native Joe Frazier’s demise in 2011, Ferguson played an electric version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. Additionally, Ferguson regularly plays in two churches in Atlanta every Sunday.

Ferguson is a native of Beaufort, South Carolina, United States. The father of Ferguson, John Wesley Ferguson, was the head deacon at Beaufort New Church of Christ. Beaufort New Church of Christ while Ferguson’s mother Martha Jenkins Ferguson, was from Saint Helena Island. Ferguson’s connection with Gullah culture was a constant throughout Ferguson’s life. He was able to play guitar at the age of three however, he “had to be sat in someone’s lap while they sat in a chair.” He was born left handed and began playing with a right-handed instrument which was held upside down. In the following two years, he began performing gospel music professionally and was a prominent entertainer, along with his siblings known as “Little John” and the Ferguson Sisters “The Lowcountry Sing” on Channel 5, a Charleston South Carolina-based station. He enriched his musical skills during the 1960s through slyly listening to WAPE, “the Big Ape” which was a station based in Jacksonville, Florida. When he was at Beaufort High School, Ferguson played trumpet in a marching band , and began to learn reading music. By 1972, he’d taken up his first band, the Earl Davis Trio. The jazz-based start was followed by a five-year period together with Stephen Best and the Soul Crusaders that toured across South Carolina. The band also performed on the revival of the tent circuit as well as recorded for LaFace Records.

In the Penn Center on Saint Helena Island, Ferguson was recruited nearly twenty years ago, to be a part of the new organization called the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Ferguson has served as the Music Maker’s director of Creative Development since the 1990s. The year 2003 saw Ferguson played at the AmeriServ Johnstown Folkfest. In the mid 2000s the band released three albums: Guitar Heaven; the seasonal album, Cool Yule; plus Cool John Ferguson All made available from Music Maker. After 2007, Ferguson made the move in Atlanta together with his spouse. It was there that Ferguson started his own label, Cool John Recordings. Ferguson’s With These Hands was the first release on the label. It contained 15 original tracks, with ten that featured vocals including blues, R&B, funk, rock and sometimes Latin rhythms.
