Concetta Anna Ferravanti-Wells (born 20 May 1959) is an Australian Liberal Party politician who was the Minister of International Development and the Pacific from 2016 until 2018 and as senator for New South Wales since 2005.
Prior to the Federal election, she served as the shadow minister of Mental Health and Ageing; and was appointed to the Abbott Ministry as the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Services from September 2013. In the Turnbull cabinet reshuffle, Fierravanti Wells was appointed as the Assistant Minister of Multicultural Affairs, an out of ministerial position.
On 13 February 2016, it was announced that Fierravanti-Wells would be appointed Minister for International Development and the Pacific following a rearrangement in the First Turnbull Ministry. In April 2018, speaking at the Overseas Development Institute in London, Fierravanti-Wells said increasing Australia’s foreign aid commitment was opposed by most in the country. “In Australia we had some research done where it showed that about 80% of Australians believe that we should not be spending more on foreign aid or that what we spend is about right.” In 2018, Australia’s foreign aid commitment stood at $3.9bn, its lowest ever level as a proportion of the budget: 0.22% of gross national income.
Fierravanti-Wells is a public opponent of same sex marriage, and was one of twelve senators who voted against what became the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017.
Fierravanti-Wells is a part of The Federal Council of the Liberal Party and is a active part of Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy as well as a member of the committee for a brand newly launched Liberal Party publication, The Conservative. Normally, she would have taken her seat on the 1st of July 2005, however , following her resignation from Senator John Tierney in April (his term was scheduled to expire at the end of June) the Senate appointed Fierravanti Wells to fill the vacancy and was elected on May 5.
Fierravanti-Wells previously served in the Turnbull Government as Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs between September 2015 and February 2016. Fierravanti-Wells was elected to the Senate at the 2004 federal election.
