Colette Nelson was born in 1974 in Southfield, Michigan and grew up in Royal Oak. At the age of 12 she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Her doctor advised her that he was going to begin insulin treatment and that she must exercise to maintain her blood pressure in control. She was a student at Clarence M. Kimball High School, and graduated as a member of the class of 1992. At the time of her high school graduation she was obsessed with fitness and was teaching 20 or more aerobics classes each week. She went to Michigan State University where she obtained a bachelor’s in dietetics, and an additional minor in dance. Following her graduation from college she relocated in New York City to attend New York University. She completed her masters qualification in nutrition clinical. She was a certified dietician as well as accredited diabetes educator. She completed a board-certified test to become a certified sports dietician.

After winning the 2010 IFBB Phoenix Pro, Colette took a break from bodybuilding and began competing in women’s physique.She competed in 2014 at Omaha and Toronto Pro. Omaha as well as the Toronto Pro and has now officially retired from competition in order to focus on her medical profession.

As of 2005, Colette took part in her debut professional event at in the New York Pro, which she finished 5th in the heavyweight category. In 2006, having finished third in at the 2005 Europa Super Show, she was selected for her debut Ms. Olympia, which she finished 13th.

In 1999, after six years of training consistently, at a weight of 165 pounds (75 kg) She began racing and was the first to win middleweight division at her first event. She also was crowned the heavyweight category and all-around at the Northeastern Championships. The same year, she was first in heavyweight in the USA Championships. Between 2001 and 2002 she finished 1st in the heavyweight category in the USA Championships. The year 2004 was the one she was the winner of the heavyweight division at Team Universe. The following year, she was awarded an IFBB professional card during the North American Championships and qualified again to receive the IFBB pro card after she was awarded the overall prize in the World Amateur Championships.
