Bennett is one of the founders of the San Antonio Spurs in the mid-1990s. One of his main duties was representing his team in the NBA Board of Governors. Just prior to 2005’s NBA year, Bennett together with Aubrey McClendon of Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corporation, Tom L. Ward of Oklahoma City-based SandRidge Energy Corporation, and G. Jeffrey Records Jr. of Oklahoma City-based MidFirst Bank, partnered with the city of Oklahoma City and the state of Oklahoma to provide an assurance of revenue for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets. The result was moving the Hornets to Oklahoma City for two seasons. The temporary move in Oklahoma City stemmed from damage to the arena and its infrastructure within New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Bennett is chairman of city-based Professional Basketball Club LLC (PBC) who own the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. The team was formerly named The Seattle Supersonics, the team was bought by Howard Schultz in 2006 for about $350 million. Bennett promising a sincere effort keeping the team in Seattle with the condition that there be the public announcement of an arena that was built. In the end, after failing to secure the $500 million public money through local taxes to build an arena in the suburbs to house the team Bennett made a public announcement to that the NBA the 2nd of November, 2007 of the intention of the owner group to relocate their team from Seattle to Oklahoma City. The 21st of March, 2008 Bennett revealed his plan to relocate the NBA franchise. On April 18 in 2008 NBA owners voted in favor to move the franchise out of Seattle in the season 2008-2009 in the event of the result of the city’s appeal to enforce the lease, as well as the former owner’s lawsuit to end the purchase. The 2nd of July, 2008 Bennett’s ownership group signed an agreement for settlement in the lawsuit brought by the city of Seattle and allowed the franchise to relocate to Seattle in Oklahoma City.

Bennett is married to Louise Gaylord Bennett, the daughter of Oklahoma City media mogul Edward L. Gaylord. Bennett and Louise Gaylord were high school sweethearts, meeting when he was a sophomore and she was a freshman. They have three children. Bennett’s in-laws also have ties to professional sports ownership, as the Gaylords once owned a minority share of the Texas Rangers—a share which was later sold to future Republican President George W. Bush. Bennett is a Republican. Bennett is chairman of a task force identifying and seeking criminal justice reforms to alleviate jail overcrowding in Oklahoma City.
