Clare Martin is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 15, 1952 in Lindfield, New South Wales, Australia. Martin is one of 10 children. Her parents were staunch Catholics and were ardent Democratic Labor Party supporters. His uncle, Kevin Cairns, was a Liberal Minister and MP in the McMahon government, however her family was not attracted to his conservatism. Martin’s family tree includes those of the Coughlin family, which included the first female statistician from NSW and the well-known player in the test game Victor Trumper. The family came of County Offaly, Ireland, until the Cromwell invasion. Martin removed from County Cork in the 1850s shortly after the Potato Famine.
She was not planning on remaining in Canberra, but she was briefly back in Canberra in May 1983 after which she was offered a position in Sydney. But, at that time her associate was approached for a position as a partner within the legal firm in which he was employed at in Darwin. He enjoyed being in Darwin and was eager to accept the job which is why Martin was willing to decline the Sydney position and relocate in Darwin the following May. There, she was offered a second position as a presenter on the ABC Radio morning show.
Martin had been interested in political journalism for some years, although she was not a member of any party, believing that party affiliation compromises journalistic integrity. In 1994, she was approached to contest the Darwin Legislative Assembly seat of Casuarina for the Labor Party at the 1994 election. However, she was defeated by Country Liberal Party candidate Peter Adamson. She soon resigned from the party and returned to journalism, but when former CLP Chief Minister Marshall Perron resigned from his Darwin seat of Fannie Bay, Martin opted to contest the ensuing by-election as the Labor candidate. Fannie Bay, like most Darwin electorates, had been a CLP stronghold; Perron held it with a majority of 8 percent. However, in a considerable upset, Martin went on to win the seat by 69 votes, becoming one of only two ALP MLAs in Darwin.
Martin worked hard to retain her seat at the 1997 election, and was successful, holding Fannie Bay despite a heavy defeat for the ALP. She subsequently served as Shadow Minister for Lands under then leader Maggie Hickey. When Hickey unexpectedly resigned in February 1999, Martin was in a position to succeed her, and was soon elected party leader, and hence Opposition Leader. She soon emerged as a vocal critic of the Burke government’s policy of mandatory sentencing, and began preparing the ALP for the next election, which was then two years away.
After spending time in London as well as other cities in the world and other cities, she started working as a typist at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney in the year 1978. After 1979, she was an apprentice reporter. After a while after that, she started to develop an interest in broadcasting however, she was informed that she wouldn’t be offered an opportunity in Sydney unless she had previous experience in other cities. Then, in February of 1983 Martin received an opportunity for six months to host a morning radio program on the radio in Darwin to ABC Radio 5DR. ABC Radio station 5DR.
