Despite the injury which left her paraplegic the condition has significantly improved due to treatments for rehabilitation as well as being active in various sports (gym exercise as well as ski, horseback riding, and swimming). Lomas has also credited the acceptance and support the husband Dan and also becoming a mom when she gave the birth of her child Maisie in February of this year.
Lomas went on to be nominated for and to win Inspirational Fundraiser at the Inspiration Awards for Women in October 2012 as well as the Helen Rollason Award for Inspiration at The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards in November 2012. She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in February 2017.
After completing the 2012 London Marathon Lomas received 14 medals from other marathon participants as symbolic recognition of her accomplishment. Her crossing the finish line at The Mall in central London was escorted by three mounted members of the Household Cavalry giving Lomas a guard of honor and she was awarded the Virgin Trophy by Holly Branson.
In August the 11th of August, Lomas revealed the launch of a semi-nude photography calendar featuring renowned athletes from Britain to raise raising funds to purchase the ReWalk suit for PS43,000. The calendar went live on September 1, 2011, and the PS10,000 portion of the total amount required was provided to Matt Hampson Foundation. Matt Hampson Foundation. Prior to 2007 Lomas was an event driver making and competing horses at Eye Kettleby, near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, UK. She was an advanced level competitor at the Advanced level in British Eventing. In the Osberton horse trials in Nottinghamshire in May 2007, she was involved in an accident hitting a tree which caused fractured ribs that punctured her lungs, creating pneumonia. She also suffered numerous fractures to her neck and spine; as well as a spinal injury that resulted in paralysis from chest down. After a swift recovery at Sheffield Northern General Hospital’s Spinal Injuries Unit, due to the spinal cord injury to the T4 thoracic vertebrae Lomas was without leg movement and no general sensation in the lower portion of her body.
The positive results and encouragement prompted Lomas to not become depressed rather, she decided to launch several fundraising campaigns and events in the period 2008-2012, publically, in order to obtain equipment to aid in her rehabilitation as well as raise money to fund research into spinal cord repairs to The British foundation Spinal Research, for which Lomas is an ambassador to Spinal Research. Lomas was given the honour of lighting the Paralympic Cauldron in Trafalgar Square on 24 August 2012 in front of Prime Minister David Cameron, Mayor Boris Johnson and Lord Sebastian Coe. She lit the cauldron in the robotic suit. She also started the Leicester Marathon in 2012 but did not attempt the entire distance.
