Christopher John Cocksworth (born 12 January 1959) is a Church of England bishop in the tradition of open evangelicalism. He is currently the (9th) bishop of Coventry before becoming the bishop, he was the principal for Ridley Hall, Cambridge.
His nomination to be appointed as the Bishop of Coventry upon Colin Bennetts’ retirement Colin Bennetts was announced on 3 March 2008. He was officially elected from the chapter of Coventry Cathedral in May following the announcement of a conge d’elire issued by Elizabeth II on the 6th of May 2008. He was officially ordained in the role of bishop on the 3rd July 2008 at Southwark Cathedral by Rowan Williams Archbishop of Canterbury and was installed as a bishop on the 1st of November 2008. The youngest archbishop of the diocesan at the date of his appointment and he remained that way until late in 2014. He joined into the House of Lords, as Lord Spiritual on the 9th of November, 2012.
He was an active part of the Church of England Liturgical Commission between 1999 and 2006 which was responsible for the revision of the ordination ceremonies as well as in revising the Common Worship daily prayer compilation. He is currently the chairman of the Faith and Order Commission of the General Synod.

He was ordained deacon at Petertide 1988 (3 July) by Michael Adie, Bishop of Guildford and ordained as to priest on the following Petertide (2 July, 1989) at the direction of David Wilcox, Bishop of Dorking both occasions at Guildford Cathedral as well as serving as the curate of Christ Church, Epsom Common within the Diocese of Guildford. He was ordained a priest in 1992. resigned to become the chaplain at Royal Holloway, University of London until 1997. Then, he became the head of the Southern Theological Education and Training Scheme which that he resigned in 2001. He was made an honourary canon at Guildford Cathedral in 1999. He later became the director for Ridley Hall, Cambridge.
He was raised in Horsham and was a student at Forest School for Boys and Collyer’s Sixth form College, then the University of Manchester where he obtained an undergraduate Master of Arts degree in theology. He graduated with First Class Honours. He in 1989, he was conferred the title in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) under the direction under the Professor Richard Bauckham. He completed his ordination studies during his time at St John’s College, Nottingham.
On 15 July 2009, Cocksworth was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity, Honoris Causa, of the University of London. The award was conferred by Royal Holloway, University of London, at a ceremony held in the college’s chapel. The University of London awards honorary degrees to those of conspicuous merit, outstanding in their field, or those who have given exceptional service to the university. Cocksworth was honoured for his services to education – particularly higher education – and to the church as well as for his service to Royal Holloway.
