Bram was named the Guggenheim Fellow in 2001, and has been a multiple- nominated nominee to the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction and was awarded the award his award in the book Lives of the Circus Animals. He was awarded the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement from Publishing Triangle, and in 2013, his book Eminent Outlaws: The Gay Writers Who Changed America received the organization’s Randy Schilts Award. The author lives within Greenwich Village and teaches at New York University.
The novel he wrote in 1995, Father of Frankenstein, about director of films James Whale, was made into the 1998 film Gods and Monsters starring Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave, and Brendan Fraser. The script produced and written by Bill Condon who won an Academy Award for the adapted screenplay.

Bram has also co-written numerous screenplays, which include short narrative and feature documentary films directed by his collaborator, Draper Shreeve.
Bram was born at Virginia Beach, Virginia (outside Norfolk) and was a schoolboy and the Eagle Scout. He completed his studies at the College of William and Mary in 1974 (B.A. in English). He relocated in 1978 to New York City in 1978.
