Chris Bartle was educated at Ampleforth College and at the University of Bristol where he earned an BSc (Econ) along with distinction in Economics. After graduation, Chris was a professional jockey however, at 5 feet 11 inches tall, he had difficulty keeping his weight low to be able to prove himself. The result was his first time with three-day events. He was first trained by his mother Mrs. Nicole Bartle and then later by Hans von Blixen-Finecke, Jr. who was a twice gold medalist at his 1952 Helsinki Olympics in Three-Day Eventing.

Bartle later took the chance to return to racing and enjoyed a variety of success, including the team winning Gold in the 1997 European Championships with the British Event Team, before winning the highly coveted Badminton Horse Trials in 1998 and on Word Perfect II, owned by Elaine and Adrian Cantwell. Bartle also travelled along with Word Perfect to the Sydney Olympics in 2000 as a reserve.

After his success in dressage, Bartle was invited to coach for the British Eventing Team, with which he traveled to Atlanta and Sydney in 1996 Atlanta in addition to the 2000 Sydney Olympic games. In 1995, Christopher Bartle received the British Horse Society’s Trainers’ Award and in 2001 was awarded the an Honorary Fellowship in the British Horse Society. In the year 2016 Chris Bartle was appointed to the position of Performance Coach for the British Evening Team.

Christopher Bartle, FBHS (born 19 February 1952 in Harrogate, North Yorkshire) is a British Equestrian who has had great success in Dressage as well as eventing. He is currently the managing Director at the Yorkshire Riding Centre and Performance Coach for the British Three Day Event Squad. Chris Bartle was a member of the British Dressage Team from 1981 until 1987. He was ranked 6th in the individual dressage at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. From 2001 to the year 2016 Together and Hans Melzer, he was the German Three Day Eventing National Team trainer. Chris is the elder brother of Jane Bartle Wilson who was also an Olympian in 1984’s Los Angeles Olympics.

As he was prepping for 1976’s Burghley Horse Trials, Bartle’s horses, Wily Trout, picked an injury to the tendon which caused the horse to retire from competing in events. But, Wily Trout showed potential in dressage. A year later, Bartle was competing in the World Championships as an individual. The pair was later an integral part of the British Dressage Team from 1981-1987. At this point, Chris Bartle took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics at Los Angeles for the British team. The team placed 8th however, Chris Bartle tied for 6th in the individual event . He went on to become the highest-ranked British rider in the world, a record that he held as of January 2011. Chris as well as Wily Trout’s final significant contribution to dressage was when they finished 2nd in the inaugural Dressage World Cup Final in the year 1986 at’s-Hertogenbosch. The time was marked with the moment Bartle was presented with the BEF’s Medal of Honour in 1986.

From 2001 to 2016 Chris was the National Coach to the German Olympic Three Day Event Team – Winners of Team and Individual Gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, with Michael Jung also becoming Individual World Champion, Kentucky 2010. His experience led to him write Training the Sport Horse, which he co-authored with Gilliam Newsum. The book was published by J. A. Allen in 2004.
