Following the election in 1990, Hart continued to practice legal and regulatory law, and was certified as mediator (Harvard) and facilitator. In 1994, she was chosen to be the head of an Ontario Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Pilot Program, which was a successful alternative to litigation that was based on trials and resolved more than half the cases it was assigned, before the examinations to be conducted for discovery. Hart was hired by KPMG as an associate in 1996. Then, in the month of May, 1997 she was appointed the president of KPMG Conflict Solutions Inc. which is a firm that specializes in the management of conflicts. In 1998, Hart established Accord/hart & associates inc. A company that provides full range of services for managing conflicts across Canada and continues as president, resolving conflict in the governance and business world.
Hart has actively served as a Director and Governor of a range of not-for- profit organizations for more than 30 years. Her long-standing interest in best governance practices led her to enroll and graduate from (March, 2005) the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management’s Director’s Education Program, becoming an accredited Corporate Director in June, 2005. She is currently a member of the boards of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and the General Insurance OmbudService. Previous Board experience includes the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), Sheridan College, Roots of Empathy, Goodwill Toronto, Kingsway College School, Canadian Stage Company, Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, CNIB Library, Leaside Arthritis Society, and the Ontario Bar Association.
From 2011 to 2016, Hart was a Board Member of Goodwill Toronto, until she abruptly resigned along with the rest of the Board.
Hart became Minister of Culture and Communications on August 2nd 1989. Prior to that, she completed her first term as an Assistant in the Parliament of Health (Murray Elston 1986) as well as minister of the Environment (Jim Bradley 1988) as well as the Treasury Secretary (Robert Nixon 1988). She was dismissed the day of her resignation on the 4th June, 1990 due to the possibility of a conflict of relationship with a telecoms company who had donated money to her presidential campaign, through which her department was influential.

Hart beat her nearest rival, Progressive Conservative Gina Brannan with 1,391 votes, in a seat previously owned in the hands of PCs. Hart was reelected with an even larger margin in the provincial election of 1987.
The Liberals were defeated by the New Democratic Party in the 1990 provincial election. Hart was defeated by New Democrat candidate Gary Malkowski by 789 votes.
