On July 9, 2009 United States Senator Patrick Leahy declared that he had suggested that Reiss be named by president Barack Obama to the United States District Court for the District of Vermont for the District of Vermont, to take over the seat that was vacant after John Garvan Murtha took senior status. On the 9th of October 2009 Obama made it clear that he would nominating Reiss to the seat on the district court. Reiss’ nomination was officially sent by the United States Senate on October 13th the 13th of October, 2009. Reiss was confirmed by the United States Senate confirmed Reiss with unanimous approval on November 21 in 2009. She was appointed to the judicial bench on the 21st day of December 2009. She was Chief Judge from 2010 to 2017.
In August 2004 Reiss has been appointed to the bench of the state as district judge.
