Crosby’s father, Kenneth Crosby, was a professor of historical studies of Juniata College. The mother of the child, Jane Miller Crosby, was an assistant professor in home economics and sociology in Juniata before the birth of her younger brother Jefferson in 1952.
From 1984 to 1985, Crosby was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers; she was an Associate of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 1990-91 and also was a faculty member with the Wesleyan Center for the Humanities in 1986, fall and the fall of 1996. Crosby was awarded in 1994 the second-annual Binswanger Faculty Teaching Prize, awarded to families for excellence in teaching.
Crosby broke her neck in a bicycle accident on October 1, 2003 at age 50. After a month in Hartford Hospital, four months in a rehabilitation hospital, and a year and a half of physical and occupational therapy, she returned to work half-time in September, 2005. She remains quadriplegic.
In February, 2016, New York University Press published A Body, Undone: Living on after Great Pain, a memoir motivated by the serious spinal cord injury she sustained at age 50.
The year 1975 was the time that Crosby began her graduate studies with Brown University and began studying to earn the Ph.D. on English. When she graduated in 1982, she was offered an appointment at Wesleyan University as an assistant professor in the English Department. She joined the faculty of students immediately. group that was formed to strengthen a women’s Studies Program begun in 1979. Crosby became associate professor at the end of 1989, and as a professor by 1996 as she continued to serve as a key part of Women’s Studies.
