He was first elected to the House in the federal election of 2006 and was a parliamentary secretary to the minister of Natural Resources until January 4 2007 when Paradis was appointed Secretary State of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Rural Secretariat. On June 25 of the year 2008, Paradis has been appointed Minister for Public Works and Government Services and remained in his post as Secretary of State of Agriculture through October of the same year. The 30th of October, 2008 as part of a cabinet shuffle after the elections, he was appointed to in the Public Works portfolio. Additionally, he was appointed to succeed Lawrence Cannon as Quebec Lieutenant. On the 19th of January 2010, as part of a cabinet shake-up and a cabinet shuffle, the Premier Harper named his Minister of Natural Resources. On May 18, 2011 during a cabinet shuffle, it was announced that he would be minister of Industry. On July 15th, 2013, during an shuffle in the cabinet the minister was named the Minister for International Development and Minister for La Francophonie.

He announced , on March 12, 2012 the lifting of restriction on ownership of foreign companies of smaller players in the wireless sector and in March 2013 he announced a brand new auction for broadband wireless spectrum to give access to newcomers as well as incumbents.
In March 2011, while serving as the Minister for Natural Resources, Minister Paradis along with Minister Normandeau announced that Canadian and Quebec governments had Canada and Quebec signed a historic deal in principle to co- manage of the Old Harry hydrocarbon reservoir, located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
