Roth is a native of New York City in 1969 and started his career as an apprentice for the designer Koos Van den Akker during August of. He spent about one year learning the trade that included basic cutting sewing, sewing, and pressing techniques. Following which, he was permitted to create items like scarves , and eventually clothing. The items were then sold through Van Den Akker’s Madison Avenue store. Roth continued working for Van Den Akker while taking classes in the evening in the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design from 1986-1987 and 1987-1988 , respectively. The year 1988 was the first time Van Den Akker gave Roth the space in his studio, where he began creating his own line of clothes. A year later, Roth opened his own design studio at the edge of the garment district of New York.

Roth’s first collection was launched in the fall of 1988. It featured fitted wool jackets, decorated with pop art-inspired motifs such as barking dogs dance step patterns , and clothespins. The collection was bought from Saks Fifth Avenue and put up in the store’s windows. In subsequent collections, Roth would further develop his humorous aesthetic. A wool jacket was embellished with appliqued and leather “M&M’s” packaging and covered buttons “candies”. Roth’s wooly jersey “Mannequin Dress” (Fall 1989) was modeled on the traditional dress for design studio. Roth’s crayon-inspired jackets as well as gowns (Fall 1990) transformed an raglan sleeve into writing instrument, using it as a blank canvas for colourful and inset “scribbles”.
