Christopher Robert Coste (born February 4 1973) is an American writer and ex-professional baseball player who made his debut for Major League Baseball (MLB) at the age of 33, following 12 seasons playing in minor league and independent baseball. Coste is an expert on Post Game Live for the Philadelphia Phillies and the hitting coach for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.

On the 25th of May 2007 Ryan Howard was re-activated off the DL and the Phillies sent Coste back to the minors and Double-A Reading. Coste decided to move to Reading to be able to begin and play all day long, and also since it would benefit the club to have him at his best, not being Jason Jaramillo’s backup Triple-A Ottawa. In June of 2007, Coste was called back to Reading due to Jon Lieber’s injury that ended his season and Jayson Werth’s injury to his wrist. Coste ended in 2007 with an .278 Batting average, 5 home runs along with 22, RBI over 48 matches.

2008 saw the release of Coste’s second autobiography, “The 33-Year-Old Rookie: How I Finally Made it to the Big Leagues After Eleven Years in the Minors.” The book, which chronicles Coste’s first season in the majors, contains a foreword by John Kruk. This book covers Coste’s professional career up through his third season (2008) with the Phillies. It includes nearly all the historical material found in his first book (independent baseball) as well as the time in the affiliated minor leagues.

On October 29, 2008, Coste became the first player that originated from Division III college baseball’s MIAC to win a World Series.

As of 1999, Coste had been signed by Pittsburgh Pirates but was released after spring training and then returned with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. in 2000, Coste was signed by an organization called the Cleveland Indians organization, having played in a significant way with the Triple-A team Buffalo Bisons. He was a part of in the Boston Red Sox organization and 2004 with the Milwaukee Brewers system. Coste first signed with the Phillies in 2005, spending the entire season with their Triple-A affiliate, then known as the Scranton /Wilkes-Barre Red Barons.

After graduating from Fargo South High School, Coste attended Kishwaukee Community College for 1 year. It was a Division II College Junior College, but later removed from the college. After that, he took courses and played in baseball at Concordia College, a Division III college in Moorhead, Minnesota, where Coste was three-time All-American. He began his professional career in 1995, playing with Brainerd, Minnesota in the independent North Central League. After the league dissolved in July, he enlisted the Brandon Grey Owls in the independent Prairie League. From 1996 to 1999 the player played four seasons for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the independent Northern League.

Coste published his first book about his experience playing professional ball: “Hey… I’m Just the Catcher: An Inside Look at a Northern League Season From Behind the Plate,” published in 1997. The book covers his initial seasons in the independent leagues of baseball which included the RedHawks (in the city he grew up in). The book is no longer in circulation and has been replaced by his latest book.

He remained with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until his promotion to the Phillies, facilitated by his fantastic performance in 2006 spring training. After starting the 2007 season in Triple-A, Coste was called back up to the majors on May 12, 2007.
